Microsoft introduces new age assurance for app store users in Australia

Microsoft is introducing age assurance measures across Microsoft and XBOX storefronts as part of our ongoing efforts to help ensure age-appropriate experiences and comply with Australia’s Age Restricted Material Online Safety Codes. These measures were communicated to all Microsoft and XBOX account holders by email on 30 July.

To download and access apps and games that are rated 18+ (for adult audiences) via Microsoft Store  and XBOX storefronts, users will soon be prompted to simply and securely confirm they are over 18 years old.

Microsoft users in Australia will have multiple options to complete age assurance for our stores before age assurance will be required in the coming weeks, giving them flexibility while prioritizing privacy. Users will be able to verify their age through privacy-protecting options, such as Yoti and Verifymy, our trusted age assurance partners, and choose one of several secure methods to verify their age, including email-based verification, facial age estimation, official document scan and credit card.
