Breaking Barriers, Building the Future: Phinyaphat Junsoton’s Journey with AI

For Phinyaphat Junsoton (Khun Nui), accessible AI isn’t just about productivity tool; it helped turn a life once defined by dependence into one built on confidence, contribution, and choice. Today, AI helps her work more effectively, improve her skills, and build a more independent future on her own terms.

Born with congenital muscle weakness and growing up as a wheelchair user in a rural environment, she faced more than physical barriers. She was often seen through the lens of limits and surrounded by social environments that questioned whether education, work, and independence would ever fully belong to her. Her mother worried constantly that one day her daughter might have to depend entirely on others. Khun Nui remembers what that felt like: being defined by what people assumed she could not do, before she had the chance to show what she could.

Determined to keep learning and move beyond the limits others placed on her, she left her hometown to study Accounting and IT at the Pattaya Redemptorist Technological College for People with Disabilities. There, she built a foundation in digital skills, including database management and basic programming, and discovered how technology could expand her opportunities. She later earned a bachelor’s degree from Sukhothai Thammathirat Open University—an achievement that reflected not only persistence but also the importance of access to the right learning environment. More recently, she joined Microsoft Elevate’s AI for Social Impact program, continuing to prepare herself for a workplace increasingly shaped by AI.

From Catching Up to Leading the Team

That commitment to lifelong learning now shapes the way she works every day. Khun Nui is a Data Entry Officer and PR representative at Phichit Drinking Co., Ltd., where she handles scheduling and employee data for more than 200 staff members across two shifts and six production lines.

The work is highly detailed and time-sensitive. Before using AI, creating the monthly shift schedule meant wrestling with complex Excel formulas and manual calculations. Even when everything went right, the process took at least three full days to complete. The introduction of AI, specifically Microsoft Copilot, fundamentally shifted her reality. Instead of searching for formulas, testing them manually, and losing hours to trial and error, Khun Nui could simply explain the parameters of the schedule and ask Copilot to help her build the exact formulas she needed. What once took a minimum of three days could now be done in about 30 minutes.

The Power of Self-Recognition

The time savings mattered, but so did something less visible: the confidence that came with being able to solve complex problems more independently and with less friction.

As Khun Nui highlighted, AI makes me feel like I have a giant knowledge vault I can access anytime, asking questions without fear of annoying anyone. It has given me so much confidence.”

When environments are rigid and manual, they highlight physical limitations. But when environments are powered by accessible AI, they highlight human ingenuity. For Khun Nui, the integration of AI was the catalyst that allowed her inherent intelligence, strategic thinking, and resilience to take center stage.

She is no longer defined by what she cannot physically do, but by the limitless scope of her potential. She is using AI not just to survive in the workforce, but to design a robust, self-reliant financial future on her own terms. Copilot helps her conduct business market research and strategic planning, laying the groundwork to build second streams of income from hydroponic farming. In that sense, AI is not only helping her do today’s job better—it is helping her prepare for tomorrow’s opportunities with greater confidence.

Elevating Potential and Opportunity

Since the 2000s, the Redemptorist Foundation for People with Disabilities (RFPD) has partnered with Microsoft Thailand to provide technology and AI literacy to People with Disabilities (PWDs). Designed to empower individuals to build independent futures, the program’s real-world success is perfectly exemplified by alumni like Khun Nui. To scale this impact, the partnership aims to educate an additional 2,000 PWDs by the end of 2026.

“When we provide access to transformative tools like AI, we aren’t just helping someone manage a workload; we are unlocking inherent talent. Khun Nui’s journey shows how lifelong learning opens the door to dignity and independence. When people with disabilities have access to meaningful work and the opportunity to contribute based on their strengths, the impact reaches far beyond employment. It builds self-worth, supports economic independence, and creates the conditions for a secure, fulfilling life,” stated Dr. Samrit Chapirom, Manager and Deputy Secretary-General of the Redemptorist Foundation for People with Disabilities (RFPD).

Khun Nui’s growing journey serves more than an inspiring story; it reflects what is possible when the right support systems and partnerships come together to unlock human potential. For Mr. Ruhimat Soerakoesoemah, Head of the Subregional Office for South-East Asia at UN ESCAP, Khun Nui’s journey is a powerful embodiment of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals in action.

“In our shared commitment to ‘leave no one behind,’ stories like Khun Nui’s remind us that inclusion begins with empathy and access. Her journey reflects how opening pathways to lifelong learning and meaningful work can transform not only individual lives, but the impact to others’ lives.

When we come together—across governments, the private sector, and civil society—to provide inclusive AI learning like AI for Social Impact, we are not just enabling participation; we are unlocking dignity, potential, and opportunity. This is how we collectively move closer to a more inclusive, sustainable future, where everyone has the chance to thrive,” he explained.

Microsoft Elevate aims to widen the circle of opportunities in ensuring individuals and organizations can thrive in the AI economy, empowering everyone, including people with disabilities, to achieve more by equipping them with accessible AI tools and vital digital skills. As Khun Nui’s success story proves, democratizing AI literacy unlocks a powerful workforce of untapped potential that drives meaningful, real-world growth.
