Gunawan took the helm of Microsoft Indonesia at a moment when the country is moving to turn its scale, young talent, and digital momentum into leadership in the AI era. He is responsible for Microsoft’s business and partnerships across the country, spanning the public sector, large enterprises, the digital-native and startup ecosystem, and millions of small and medium-sized businesses, with a focus on responsible AI adoption, local talent, and inclusive growth
His work builds on Microsoft’s deepening, long-term commitment to Indonesia, including a US$1.7 billion investment over four years in local cloud and AI infrastructure. On skilling, more than 2 million people have participated in Microsoft Elevate since it was introduced in Indonesia, with over 1.2 million earning Microsoft-recognized credentials.
His vision for Microsoft in Indonesia extends beyond technology. He believes technology can be a powerful force for positive change, and anchors his leadership in responsible AI adoption, local talent development, and inclusive growth.
With more than two decades of experience in the industry, Gunawan has held leadership positions at globally renowned tech firms. He was the first Country Manager for Amazon Web Services (AWS) in Indonesia, where he established local operations and scaled the business significantly. Before that, he led IBM Indonesia as President Director, transforming the business towards services and delivering record revenue performance.
Beyond his corporate roles, Gunawan is an active mentor with Endeavor Indonesia and a long-standing member of the Young Presidents’ Organisation (YPO), reflecting his commitment to the broader business and startup ecosystem. Outside of work, he is driven by a personal mission of improving healthcare access for every Indonesian.
