SAN FRANCISCO, July 22, 1996 — Microsoft Corp. today introduced the Enterprise Edition of the Microsoft® Visual C++® development system to 1,500 developers at the Visual C++ Developers Conference. Based on the most popular C++ system available today for the Windows® 95 and Windows NT®
operating systems, Visual C++ version 4.2, Enterprise Edition fills an immediate need of developers building advanced client/server solutions.
Visual C++, Enterprise Edition provides a complete toolset for developing C++ applications and components that access remote databases, including SQL databases, and take advantage of the latest Internet and ActiveX
™
technologies.
“We designed Visual C++, Enterprise Edition to satisfy the rapidly growing demand of corporate development teams implementing information systems that integrate traditional client/server and SQL database technology and the new Internet Web technology,”
said Bob Muglia, vice president of developer tools at Microsoft.
Designed to be the most complete C++ tool bridging the client and server components of a database or intranet application, Visual C++, Enterprise Edition includes the following:
-
A new Data View feature that allows developers to edit and view both SQL database stored procedures and the C++ functions that call them – from within the same development environment.
-
An integrated SQL debugger for stepping from C++ source code running on a client to a stored database procedure running on a remote server. As the first C++ product to debug both kinds of code together, Visual C++, Enterprise Edition overcomes a major obstacle to creating reliable applications.
-
Data controls that bind to database fields and records for viewing, selecting, updating and deleting the elements of a local or remote database. In addition, data controls can be bound to any ActiveX data source control. ActiveX is an open, cross-platform specification supported by Microsoft that enables developers to bring interactivity to the World Wide Web.
In addition to strong database support, Visual C++, Enterprise Edition includes the powerful Internet capability recently announced as part of Visual C++ version 4.2, Professional Edition. The special Internet capability includes, but is not limited to, the following:
-
Support for the new WinInet Library API , used to make the Internet an integral part of an application and simplify access to the FTP, HTTP and gopher Internet services
-
Faster, more flexible ActiveX Controls for interactive Web-based applications that can include drawing optimizations, flicker-free activation, windowless objects and nonrectangular objects
-
HTML syntax coloring and the ability to read and write both GIF and JPEG file formats.
-
New Crystal Reports
™ for exporting report files that are automatically ready for use on the World Wide Web.
Because corporate projects can become complex, Visual C++, Enterprise Edition helps teams of developers share and synchronize changes by including links to Microsoft’s and other companies’ source-code control systems. Microsoft’s version control system, Visual SourceSafe
™
, is also included.
