Microsoft and Asia Connect Announce Strategic Alliance

REDMOND, Wash., Nov. 5, 1996 — Microsoft Corp. and Asia Connect today announced a broad technology alliance. Asia Connect is the first company in the Asia-Pacific area to license the Microsoft® Commercial Internet System and will use the Microsoft BackOffice
™based system to run a variety of services.

The Commercial Internet System that Asia Connect is licensing is built on the powerful Microsoft Windows NT® Server network operating system with integrated Microsoft Internet Information Server. This open platform technology is an advanced set of software tools used for delivering interactive services and creating, managing and distributing content. The Microsoft Commercial Internet System offers the power to support tens of thousands of concurrent users, the scalability to support millions of users per day, and the openness to work with applications and extensions developed by Internet developers.

Malaysia’s Asia Connect is an Internet service provider focused on developing Asian-rich content and serving Web- and transaction-based solutions for retail organizations, financial institutions, broadcasters, corporations and government agencies. Its scope of work includes network consulting, integration, development, maintenance, security, database development, Web site design, multimedia production, content development and marketing consulting. Asia Connect will use the Commercial Internet System to build some of the most extensive efforts offered on the Internet to date, including the following:

  • PenangNet. Asia Connect will build a fiber-to-home-based network covering the entire state of Penang, including residences, businesses, schools and government agencies, by the end of 1997. Asia Connect will use the Microsoft Commercial Internet System as the platform for PenangNet.

  • 1998 Commonwealth Games. The Commonwealth Games, which are being hosted in Malaysia in 1998, will use Asia Connect as the technology provider for Internet services. Asia Connect will use the Microsoft Commercial Internet System as the software solution for these services.

  • Asia Connect Internet services and Web hosting. Asia Connect will begin to deploy Microsoft Commercial Internet System as the foundation for its many services, including Web hosting and providing Internet connectivity to businesses and consumers.

The Microsoft Commercial Internet System will enable Asia Connect to provide complete and innovative services to its customers, based on the Microsoft Commercial Internet Mail Server, Microsoft Commercial Internet News Server, Microsoft Membership System, Microsoft Content Replication System, Microsoft Personalization System, Microsoft Conference Server and Microsoft Merchant Server.
