REDMOND, Wash., March 25, 1997 — Microsoft Corp. today announced that more than 1,300 independent software vendors (ISVs) are shipping thousands of commercial products that interoperate with the newest versions of Microsoft® visual developer tools. More than 70 of these ISVs have already announced new or updated products designed to take advantage of the new capabilities of Microsoft’s comprehensive line of developer tools – further evidence that the market for third-party development add-ons and components continues to grow.
In January 1997, industry research firm Giga Research estimated that the size of the ActiveX
™
component business alone in 1996 was $240 million and would grow to $3.3 billion by 2001. “The continued growth of the market for third-party developer products compatible with Microsoft’s developer tools is nothing short of spectacular,” said Tom Button, director of marketing, developer tools division at Microsoft. “It validates that the market for desktop, Internet and intranet applications produced with these tools is robust and healthy.”

™
database management system, as well as the new Visual J++
