REDMOND, Wash., Oct. 6, 1998 — Marking the first of several upcoming tools continuing to make Microsoft® Windows NT® Workstation 4.0 the mainstream business desktop, Microsoft Corp. today announced that the system preparation tool for Windows NT Workstation 4.0 is now available for order. This new tool provides an easy and efficient way for business customers to deploy Windows NT Workstation 4.0 throughout their organizations.
“Windows NT Workstation 4.0 is rapidly becoming the mainstream business desktop,” said Yusuf Mehdi, director of Windows® marketing at Microsoft.
“With the release of this important migration tool, businesses can now migrate their existing Windows 95-based desktops to take advantage of the reduced total cost of ownership in Windows NT Workstation 4.0.”
The Microsoft system preparation tool for Windows NT Workstation 4.0 is a simple utility that prepares a PC’s hard disk for duplication. Once the disk is prepared, customers can use a variety of third-party utilities to easily deploy Windows NT Workstation 4.0 on multiple systems throughout their organizations. Companies like Symantec and Altiris are excited that Microsoft is providing a product that eases deployment, lowers TCO and improves manageability for corporate customers.
“The Microsoft system preparation tool combined with Symantec’s Norton Ghost gives customers an easy and reliable solution for imaging multiple Windows NT-based workstations quickly and securely,”
said Matt Olenski, senior business development manager at Symantec.
“Altiris is pleased to provide a leading solution for the rapid deployment of Windows NT Workstation 4.0 systems,”
said Jan Newman, president and CEO of Altiris Inc.
“The combination of RapiDeploy from Altiris and the Microsoft system preparation tool for Windows NT Workstation 4.0 provides our customers with a Microsoft approved method for cloning Windows NT-based workstations. This demonstrates Microsoft’s willingness to support the efforts of third parties in delivering solutions to their customers.”
Deploying Windows NT Workstation 4.0 with this method can take minutes per PC – much faster than typical operating system upgrades, which take several hours to install. Using the system preparation tool can translate into substantial cost savings for customers.
