Microsoft Ships Windows 2000 Datacenter Server to Program Partners

REDMOND, Wash., Aug. 11, 2000 — Microsoft Corp. today announced the release to manufacturing of the Microsoft® Windows® 2000 Datacenter Server, completing the product family for the Windows 2000 operating system. The Windows 2000 Datacenter Server and its complementary Windows Datacenter Program delivers today’s enterprise a high level of reliability, scalability and serviceability for line-of-business, e-commerce solutions and hosting environments. Windows 2000 Datacenter Server provides businesses with the best business value for enterprise computing today and also provides a platform for tomorrow’s .NET applications, which require the highest degrees of scalability and reliability, support for a wide range of devices, adherence to key standards like XML, and support for software as a Web service.

“We are delighted at the level of customer anticipation and industry momentum surrounding Windows 2000 Datacenter Server and the Windows Datacenter Program. The program brings together the industry’s leaders to provide a high-quality, fully integrated, tested and supported solution for our customers,”
said Steve Ballmer, president and chief executive of Microsoft.
“This week I am pleased to report that Dell, Hewlett-Packard, IBM and Unisys have signed, joining Compaq, as Authorized Datacenter Partners, while other industry leaders are expected to join in time for the Sept. 26 launch.”

The Windows Datacenter Program is a cooperation between Microsoft and the industry to address the most demanding requirements of enterprise customers, providing a
“bet-your-business”
cost-effective alternative to existing proprietary computing environments. The Windows 2000 Datacenter Server has been designed for enterprises that require high-end, very reliable software for high-traffic networks and the ability to support a large number of applications and users on fewer servers. mIt provides the best business value for both traditional back-end datacenter environments and application service providers.

“The combination of Windows 2000 Datacenter Server and the power of the Unisys e-@ction Enterprise Server ES7000 server will be very interesting for many of our customers,”
said Hinrich Mielke, manager of High Availability Solutions for realTech.
“The demand for computing power and nonstop operation greatly increased with the arrival of mySAP.com.”

Windows for the Enterprise

The Windows Datacenter Program will be kicked off Sept. 26 in San Francisco, Calif., as part of Microsoft’s Enterprise 2000 Launch event announced last week. Datacenter will be joined by the .NET enterprise servers, comprised of SQL Server™
2000, Exchange 2000 Server, BizTalk Server 2000, Commerce Server 2000, Application Center 2000, Internet Security and Acceleration Server 2000 and Host Integration Server 2000 as well as other enterprise-ready products and services. Delivering on the Microsoft .NET vision, the combination of Windows 2000 Datacenter Server and the .NET enterprise servers provides one of the best platforms for building, deploying and managing Web services, thus providing the foundation for the third generation of the Internet.

Completion of the Windows 2000 Server Family

With the release to manufacturers of the Windows 2000 Datacenter Server, the Windows 2000 family is complete, providing a solid and reliable platform that will exceed the needs of a wide range of computing environments. Windows 2000 has rapidly proved itself among customers as an ideal platform for the next generation of business computing, addressing the full range of customers’ computing needs, from laptops and desktops to high-end clustered servers.
