Microsoft Announces Proxy Server 2.0

ATLANTA, Oct. 8, 1997 — At the NetWorld+Interop trade show today, Microsoft Corp. announced the availability of Microsoft® Proxy Server 2.0 for the Windows NT® Server network operating system, the first product to combine extensible firewall security and high-performance Web caching for networks of all sizes. Microsoft Proxy Server 2.0 adds new features designed to enhance network performance and security of small and large businesses and to improve performance by up to 40 percent over its predecessor, Microsoft Proxy Server 1.0.

Businesses building intranets and connecting their networks to the Internet face a number of challenges, including network security, network performance and total cost of network ownership. Traditionally, customers have had to acquire separate firewall and caching products to address these needs. Microsoft Proxy Server 2.0 delivers solutions to all of these key requirements in a single product. Proxy Server 2.0 adds features such as scalable array-based and hierarchical caching, dynamic packet filtering, real-time alerting, reverse proxy and SOCKS support.

“Our customers have told us that they need advanced network security and performance features, all at an affordable price,” said Rich Tong, vice president of marketing, personal and business systems group at Microsoft. “With Proxy Server 2.0 we’re delivering a greatly enhanced set of features – including a firewall and fault-tolerant, scalable caching – which addresses these customer requirements.”

Microsoft Proxy Server also provides a platform for development of third-party enhancements. Many vendors are developing or have already completed value-added products that run on Microsoft Proxy Server. These products include Trend Micro InterScan Web Protect for virus scanning, Cyber Patrol Proxy for content filtering, and Market Wave Hit List and TELEMATE.Net for reporting.

“By taking advantage of the Microsoft Proxy Server platform, Trend Micro is able to deliver closely integrated virus protection at the Internet gateway,” said Eva Chen, chief technology officer at Trend Micro Inc. “Customers using InterScan Web Protect 2.0 and Microsoft Proxy Server 2.0 get a complete solution with on-the-fly virus scanning, known malicious code blocking, firewall security and caching.”

Microsoft Proxy Server is tightly integrated with Windows NT Server to provide a solution for connecting remote users, branch offices, customers and business partners to the information and resources they need.

Customers can download a free 30-day evaluation copy of Microsoft Proxy Server 2.0 from the Web at http://www.microsoft.com/proxy/ (connect-time charges may apply). Proxy Server is available for an estimated retail price of $995.
