Bill Gates Outlines Microsoft’s Role in Australia’s New Generation of Technology Innovators

Sydney, September 11, 2000 — Today at the Sydney Media Centre in Pyrmont, Bill Gates presented Microsoft’s .NET strategy and reinforced the company’s commitment to Australia as a ‘leading adopter and innovator in technology’. The press conference kicked off Bill’s two day working visit to Australia, which will also include presentations and meetings with the New South Wales and Victorian Governments, Victorian youth, The World Economic Forum, as well as with customer and partners.

Bill Gates said today:
“I always enjoy my visits to Australia, particularly because it is such an early adopter of new technology. My conversations with our Australian partners and customers reinforce my view that Australia produces some world leading best practices in the information technology revolution. The .NET vision that Microsoft has embarked on will provide the basis for future leadership in the sector.”

Generation .NET: Taking IT to the limit

Part of Bill Gates’ Australian visit will include a presentation (in conjunction with the Victorian government) in Melbourne on September 12 th to 4,500 school children. At this event Bill will be encouraging the nation’s youth, and particularly young women, to consider IT as a career.

“The IT skills gap has become a truly global phenomenon and countries across the world need to encourage people to consider IT as a career option. While I’m in Australia I hope to demonstrate that a career in technology is an opportunity to be at the cutting edge of a revolution that will embrace every aspect of life,”
Bill Gates concluded.

.NET is a new platform, user experience and set of advanced software services that will connect a wide range of devices from tablet-sized PCs to smart cards – in effect, realising Microsoft’s vision of empowering people through great software any time, any place and on any device.
