INDIANAPOLIS — Feb. 2, 2012 — In an effort to inspire the masses to get off the couch this Sunday, Kinect for Xbox 360, the official console sponsor of the NFL, and NFL PLAY 60 today announced a challenge to fans and gamers across the country to help make Feb. 5, 2012, “The Most Active Super Bowl Sunday Ever.”
This afternoon, NFL PLAY 60 ambassador and Super Bowl XLIV MVP Drew Brees were joined by kids from an Indianapolis-area middle school in a press conference from the NFL’s Super Bowl media center to outline the details of the “Kinect for Xbox 360 Super Sunday Challenge.” In the spirit of NFL PLAY 60, which encourages kids to get 60 minutes of physical activity daily to fight the childhood obesity epidemic, Xbox and Brees are challenging families to participate in a total of 60 minutes of controller-free active fun with Kinect for Xbox 360 on Sunday before or after the Super Bowl.
“As a father of two, I appreciate the importance of making sure kids stay active,” said Brees. “That’s why I’ve embraced the challenge of making this ‘The Most Active Super Bowl Sunday Ever’; I’ll be leading the effort by spreading the message and challenging families to get in 60 active minutes this Sunday. Playing Kinect for Xbox 360 is a fun way to achieve this goal, so join me in embracing this challenge by posting your Kinect photos and videos on the Xbox Facebook and Twitter pages.”
NFL PLAY 60 Partner
Kinect for Xbox 360 provides controller-free games and entertainment that use your whole body to play. Kinect offers a natural and interactive way for kids to get off the couch and have fun while meeting their 60 minutes of daily activity — particularly when it’s too cold or too hot to be outside.
“Weather and daylight can limit how long kids can play outdoors safely, but with Kinect for Xbox 360, your body is the controller and our games get kids kicking, jumping and running right in their living rooms,” said Yusuf Mehdi, chief marketing officer of Microsoft’s Interactive Entertainment Business. “As families gather indoors for their parties this Sunday, Kinect for Xbox 360 is a great game-day activity to get 60 minutes of active fun.”
“Kids have so many great entertainment options, but Kinect for Xbox 360 is one that gets them off the couch to play,” said Brian Rolapp, chief operating officer of NFL Media. “It aligns with what NFL PLAY 60 is all about — developing innovative, fun ways to keep kids active.”
Designed to tackle childhood obesity, NFL PLAY 60 brings together the NFL’s long-standing commitment to health and wellness with partner organizations, such as Xbox 360. Since the program was launched in 2007, the NFL has committed more than $250 million to youth health and fitness through programming, grants and media time for public service announcements. The NFL and its teams have built more than 100 NFL Youth Fitness Zones and organized more than 1,500 NFL PLAY 60 youth events.
“As a proud partner of the NFL and Kinect for Xbox 360, I am thrilled to see the increased attention Microsoft and the NFL are giving to this epidemic. Today, only 18 percent of our children get 60 minutes of physical activity daily,” said Alexis Glick, CEO of the GENYOUth Foundation, a nonprofit organization committed to fighting childhood obesity. “Our in-school program, Fuel Up to PLAY 60, reaching 36 million kids every school day, is attacking this issue on the front lines. We need continued leadership, attention and investment in this issue to ensure our children live as long as we do.”
