Microsoft moves to Redmond

Microsoft moved its headquarters from Bellevue, Washington, to a 30-acre lot in nearby Redmond with six buildings and a pond that came to be called “Lake Bill,” after Bill Gates. Microsoft expanded the facility in 1992 to 260 acres and 1.7 million square feet of office space. It eventually grew to 125 buildings with 15 million square feet on 500-plus acres.

In 2017, Microsoft announced plans for a major renovation that would add 17 new buildings and 6.7 million square feet to accommodate up to 8,000 more employees.
