Facebook, Flipboard and NFL apps are headed to Windows

As part of his keynote at Build 2013 in San Francisco today, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer announced that Facebook, Flipboard and NFL apps are coming to Windows. These marquee apps, along with other apps announced as part of the Windows 8.1 update, are testament to the steady momentum of app development for the Windows platform.

Visual Studio 2013 Preview now available for download

There’s a lot going on at the Build 2013 conference today, but of note is the immediate availability of a toolset that helps build apps for Windows 8.1 –Visual Studio 2013 and .NET 4.5.1 Previews. For developers, Visual Studio 2013 makes it easier and faster for them to create apps and services. And .NET 4.5.1 enables developers to build next generation apps for devices and services.

Bing will open up more of its APIs and controls via new developer platform

You can see Bing at work across many of Microsoft’s devices and services. New search capabilities in Windows 8.1. Windows Phone features like Local Scout, the Translator app, and voice recognition. Xbox One’s gesture integration, the Bing Apps for Office 2013, Skype … the list goes on.

A closer look at the new Kinect for Windows sensor and SDK

Today at the Build 2013 conference in San Francisco, more details emerged on the new generation Kinect for Windows that was announced in May. Starting today, developers can apply for a place in an upcoming developer kit program, which gives participants exclusive early access to everything they need to start building applications for the new generation Kinect for Windows sensor, including a pre-release version of the new sensor hardware and SDK in November.

Get a first-hand look at the Windows 8.1 Preview today!

Today, Microsoft announced at Build 2013 that the Windows 8.1 Preview is here. New features include two new tile sizes (large and small) and the ability to sync customizations, apps and files across all your Windows 8.1 devices. In other words, if you change your Start screen, install new apps, pin new apps to your Start screen on one PC – all those changes are synced to your other PCs. Also, the Windows Store has been redesigned to make it easier to find the apps you want.

Yammer expands platform integrations, including Klout

Yammer is expanding its network of colleagues. With the addition of a handful of new partners, including Klout, Yammer is now a way to connect with favorite apps as well as with coworkers. In fact, Yammer has doubled its number of partner integrations (now at 60) since launching the Yammer App Directory in October.
