You shoot a video while hiking or cycling, but when you speed up the action so people can view a condensed version of your trip, the bumpiness makes the video unwatchable. Enter Hyperlapse, one of the technologies Microsoft Research is presenting this week at SIGGRAPH 2014.

The latest video in Channel 9’s “Microsoft Research Luminaries” series stars Distinguished Scientist and Microsoft Research Deputy Managing Director John Platt and explores his work in artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning and the impact of deep learning on those fields.

Computer software can include millions of lines of code, so mistakes are bound to happen. But now, Microsoft researcher Andrew Begel and his colleagues are trying a new approach to reduce those errors known as “bugs” by tracking the eye movements and other mental and physical characteristics of developers as they work.
