Designed to gauge consumer online safety habits and behaviors, the Index reveals that the U.S. score has decreased year-after-year since it was first launched in 2011. In other words, consumers are not taking enough precautions to protect themselves online.

Microsoft has added detection and removal of the trojan “Win32/Simda” to its Malicious Software Removal Tool. According to the Microsoft Malware Protection Center blog, the Simda is a multi-component malware family that includes trojan, backdoor, password-stealing, downloader and file-infector variations.

There are plenty of ways you can help strengthen your privacy online. The Security Tips & Talk blog highlights a phishing scam that comes in the form of an email message claiming to be from Microsoft. The message states that the user’s email account is blocked and can only be unblocked with a credit card number. It’s not from Microsoft.
