Urban legend true: Xbox dig finds long-buried Atari ‘E.T.’ video game cartridges

After a few hours of digging down past 30 feet of debris, excavators found what they were looking for: “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial” game cartridges that had been buried by Atari three decades ago in a landfill in New Mexico. The excavation was filmed over the weekend as part of an Xbox Entertainment Studios original documentary series to be released only on Xbox One and Xbox 360 later this year.

Starting in June, Xbox Originals – dramas, comedies, documentaries, animation, unscripted shows and live events with interactive capabilities – are headed to Xbox 360, Xbox One and other Microsoft devices. Among the shows: the “Halo” live-action TV series, based on the “Halo” franchise, with Steven Spielberg as the executive producer.
