Microsoft Announces Next Version of Visual InterDev

REDMOND, Wash., Jan. 26, 1998 — Microsoft Corp. today announced the newest version of the Microsoft® Visual InterDev
™
Web development system, the leading team-based development tool for rapidly building data-driven Web applications. A prerelease version – scheduled to be available in the second quarter of 1998 – will give developers the opportunity to explore key new features and begin building applications for the latest Microsoft Web software, Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 and Internet Information Server 4.0. New features in Visual InterDev enable developers to build data-driven Web applications faster than ever through end-to-end rapid Web application development. In addition, developers can create broad-reach applications that can talk to any browser and any database. New and enhanced features include a WYSIWYG HTML editor, support for Dynamic HTML, client- and server-side debugging, improved database tools and advanced support for team-based development.

“The response to Visual InterDev 1.0 has been excellent; it quickly became the No.1 Web tool for HTML and script-based development,” said Paul Gross, vice president, developer tools division at Microsoft. “We expect an even stronger response to the next release, where we’ve added customers’ most-requested features, including complete support for debugging and much more. Furthermore, because Visual InterDev is member of the Visual Studio
™tools suite, we are very excited about features that make it even easier to integrate server-side COM components created in Visual Basic® , Visual C++® , Visual J++
™
and Visual FoxPro
™
into a browser-based cross-platform application.”

Build Data-Driven Web Applications Faster Than Ever

Visual InterDev optimizes the process of designing, building, debugging and deploying broad-reach HTML and script-based Web applications without sacrificing performance, enabling a true rich experience. Data-driven Web applications must take advantage of the latest advances in browser technology such as Internet Explorer 4.0, Dynamic HTML and multimedia features, while tapping into corporate infrastructure, existing applications and data. The powerful, integrated database tools in Visual InterDev make it easier to bring data into Web applications and enable programmers to work with any ODBC or OLE DB database.

The following features make Visual InterDev an essential tool for targeting the Web and harnessing the power of client/server tools:

  • Full-featured debugging. A complete set of debugging tools makes it easier to test and debug complex client- and server-side script. Among other things, the debugger enables remote server-side Active Server
    ™
Pages debugging and allows developers to preview Web pages simultaneously in multiple browsers to ensure consistency.

  • WYSIWYG HTML page editor. This cutting-edge visual page editor includes support for the latest advances in browser technology, including advanced support for Dynamic HTML.

  • Enhanced Visual Database Tools . Support for database reporting and Internet Explorer 4.0 remote data access enables developers to create enterprise-class data-driven Web applications and simplify programming tasks when targeting existing databases.

  • Enhanced standards-based team development. In addition to new support for individual programmers, Visual InterDev provides improved source code control and improved interoperability with the other tools to meet the challenges of team-based Web development.

  • New Deployment features for middle-tier COM server components. New features make it easier to build and deploy component-based Web applications, including integration with the Microsoft Transaction Server for building scalable and robust enterprise Web applications.

Customers Await New Visual InterDev

“We are very excited about the newest version of Visual InterDev. Using Visual InterDev 1.0, we have successfully deployed a BAO-wide intranet procurement system,” said Boyd Nolan, Boeing Aerospace Operations lead engineer. “This latest version will help us build our Web applications faster and more efficiently than is possible today.”

Choice and Flexibility Raise the Bar on Cutting-Edge Web Applications

Visual InterDev delivers HTML-based Web applications that are browser- and platform- independent while also providing open extensibility with third-party components that can seamlessly extend the tools’ capabilities. Visual InterDev provides support for any HTML 3.2 browser, including Netscape’s and AOL’s, as well as for the latest advances in Internet Explorer 4.0. In addition, Visual InterDev natively exposes the functionality of IIS 4.0, enabling developers to create a full range of IIS 4.0 applications, from HTML to high-volume, transactional multitier component-based applications.

Microsoft Visual InterDev will include Microsoft FrontPage® 98, the world’s best selling Web site creation and management tool. Microsoft FrontPage 98 is a quick, effective way to create and manage professional-quality Internet or intranet sites without programming. Used together, FrontPage 98 and Visual InterDev enable nonprogrammers and programmers to work in a team-based development environment.
