Regional leaders from Microsoft recently held a two-day summit in Male with Maldives officials and business leaders to introduce new technologies and reiterate Microsoft’s commitment to this nation of islands in the Indian Ocean.

Day one of the summit focused on powering innovation, streamlining security across platforms and new solutions to enable public and commercial sectors to digitally transform their workloads. Discussions included ways of using Artificial Intelligence (AI), expanding the skills of citizens, supporting sustainability agendas and ensuring a safer cyberspace.

The second day focused on strengthening small businesses through partner ecosystem, helping them grow their businesses, better serve customers and make full use of cloud computing, including safeguarding business assets data with Microsoft’s Security solutions.

“The use of technologies like AI will play a critical role in ensuring cyber security and efficiency in the digital eco system,” said Sook Hoon Cheah, general manager, Microsoft Southeast Asia New Markets. “With sustainability at the core of all our initiatives, Microsoft will leverage our technology to empower Maldives in achieving impactful sustainability that would in turn positively benefit the lives of citizens.”

One of the new national level initiatives was the collaboration between Microsoft and the Maldives Police to enhance processes such as improved incident reporting, instant reporting by field officers to the headquarters, secure communication and instant SOS support.

The use of AI and cloud technologies will also enable the nation to achieve its sustainable goals. Microsoft products will bolster these efforts to ensure that Maldives grows with a combined vision of development and sustainability. The Maldives government has been actively driving the adoption of government technology (GovTech) solutions to improve citizen-centric services. The government has implemented several initiatives to enhance digital services and make them more accessible to the people of the Maldives.

Said Harsha Randeny, country manager, Sri Lanka & Maldives, “With the Maldives embracing the latest technology and working with Microsoft towards a digitized economy, we are deeply committed to harness this potential, and drive innovative, inclusive and sustainable growth across the islands. We are supporting the digital acceleration in alignment with the existing policies of the government and other organizations involved, allowing them to have greater control over their data in a secure environment and develop new skills while using responsible AI.”
